Keep Your Apartment Warm During the Cold Winter Chill

A fire in the fireplace, a cozy pair of socks, hot chocolate...how do you stay warm and save on energy in your apartment in the winter?

Whether the weather outside has dropped to the mid fifties or is cruising below zero, winter weather effects us all in some little way. Keeping your apartment warm and toasty can get expensive in the winter, as you use heat and electricity to keep your one, two, or three bedroom floor plan cozy. You don’t have to kill your bills to stay warm. Instead, use some of these methods to stay warm and budget friendly throughout the season:

  • Plug in a humidifier at night. Humidity can raise the temperature in the air, and is an amazing asset when you’re trying to stay warm.
  • Bake something, then leave the oven open while it cools (with care taken to watch children and pets, of course).  The baked goods will warm you while offering a sweet treat, while the heat from the oven heats the room.
  • Enjoy a fire. Does your apartment have a fireplace? Make the most of it! Light a fire this season and enjoy the warm and nostalgic glow while also enjoying energy savings.

Money Saving Tips: Electricity

We know it’s the time of year when people go all out and decorate their houses, or at least their balconies, with Wizards of Winter-esqu proportions of holiday lights and decorations.  Still, there’s no reason why we can’t attempt to save a little money by being more efficient with our usage of electricity, regardless of what season it is. Consider the following examples:

Turn It Off – Chances are you’ve heard this one before, or atleast something that follows the same logic train. If you’re leaving a room with a light on, turn it off. If you’re leaving the apartment and your computer’s still on, then turn it off before you leave.

Daylight – Consider opening the blinds and letting daylight shine in during the day. Try using daylight more often in favor of your electric lights.  During the colder winter months, this will serve two purposes, as daylight will also raise the average temperature in your apartment a few degrees in addition to providing light.

Pull the Plug – Most of our devices plugged into electrical outlets have a continuous “pull” on that outlet, regardless of whether or not their turned on.  Leaving a cell phone charger plugged in long after the phone has been fully charged is a good example.  What’s more, while it may seem like a hassle, consider unplugging any device from an outlet that’s not in use and doesn’t need to remain continuously plugged in (desktop computer, refrigerator, etc.)

Try implementing these tips for a few months, and then check your electric bill.  You’ll be surprised at how much you’re saving.

Pet Safety Tips for the Holiday Season in Your Apartment

Don't let your pets miss out on holiday cheer, but be sure to protect them from holiday hazards in your pet-friendly TriBridge apartment.

Many of the TriBridge apartment communities, spanning from Ponte Vedra Beach, FL to Mt Juiet, TN, are pet-friendly. We love having both our two legged and four legged residents in our communities; pets add a great deal to your life, and studies have even shown that pets can help us live longer and reduce our stress levels. While you may love sharing various aspects of the community with your pet through walks around the apartments and allowing them to sit by you on the sofa, you’ll want to be careful with how much you share with them during the holidays. The holidays are a time to have fun and enjoy life, but they can also be hazardous to our canine and feline friends. Here are a few ways you can protect your pet during the holiday season:

  • Did you decorate with a tree this year? The water in the stand, the electricity from the lights, and glass and small pieces from ornaments can all be hazardous to your pet. The tree should be an off-limits zone for your cats and dogs. Use a baby gate to block them or supervise your pets whenever they’re in the same room as the tree.
  • Foods are typically richer during the holiday season, with plenty of fat and sugar. Most of these foods are not good for your pet, and some can even be poisonous (onions, certain greens, etc). Make sure guests don’t feed your pet scraps from their plate, and be cautious about what you share yourself.
  • Holiday plants, like mistletoe and poinsettias, are beautiful, but not pet friendly. Keep them out of pets’ reach, or use faux plants instead of the real deal.
