Throw a Festive Fête for Mardi Gras

mardi gras party

Mardi Gras is almost here, and just because you may not live in the Big Easy doesn’t mean you shouldn’t celebrate in style. “Mardi Gras” is French for “Fat Tuesday” and will fall on February 12th, this year. While the day was originally a faith-based holiday, it has now evolved into a celebration of cultural uniqueness and different cultures “uniting under the common theme of being people who like to have fun and enjoy each other and have a great time.”

Brazil, Venice, and New Orleans are known for throwing the most famous Mardi Gras celebrations around the world. While we can’t give you a plane ticket to one of those cities to enjoy the festivities, we can share ideas on how to bring the party atmosphere straight to your TriBridge apartment.

Invitations

First impressions are the most important, and the first impression of a party is the invitation. Make sure your invitations signal the right mood. If you are planning a small get-together of just your closest friends and family, a phone call or email will suffice. If you’re setting your sights a little higher and planning to host a larger gathering or a more formal affair, festive invitations are a great way to set the tone. Pinterest is a great place to go for a little invitation inspiration.

Neighbor relations are very important in an apartment. If you know and enjoy your neighbors, send them an invitation as well. That way they can enjoy the festivities instead of just hearing them. If you don’t want to invite neighbors, consider letting them know you’ll be having guests over and when you plan to end the party. A little consideration can go a long way!

Food

The invitations will bring guests to your Mardi Gras party, but the food will make them stay. The most quintessential Mardi Gras cuisine is the King Cake. If you’re feeling ambitious and want to bake your own cake, you might find this video tutorial from All Recipes helpful. You can also order king cakes online if you prefer to stay out of the kitchen.

Décor

Now that you have festive invitations and a proper king cake, it’s time to bring the atmosphere to life. There are two routes you can take here; the traditional route or the eclectic route. The first option focuses on Mardi Gras traditions: lots of gold and purple and green, beaded necklaces, and feathered masks. This Mardi Gras wreath from Etsy makes a fun and beautiful welcome. For a whimsical twist, try these sparkly gold mustache cupcake toppers

The eclectic route lets you think a little outside the box. While you should still incorporate the traditional elements of Mardi Gras, your party can also strive to celebrate New Orleans’ style. Use the iconic New Orleans jazz music as your backdrop for the evening. We love these jazz instrument cut outs as décor options as well. The fleur de lis is an official symbol of Louisiana and is particularly associated with New Orleans, so it also makes a great decorative flourish. You can even wear them in this festive headband!

We hope these tips help you plan the party of the year. If you have other ideas for throwing the perfect Mardi Gras party, share them with our other residents on our Facebook page.

Decorating for the Holidays on a Budget

Between the home-cooked meals and the gift buying that come with the holidays, your wallet may start feeling stretched to the brink this December. But don’t think that you have to skimp on showing your holiday spirit. We have some tips on how to create a winter wonderland without breaking the bank.

1. Get More Bank for Your Buck

If you’re going to devote valuable time and energy to making your apartment look beautiful, why not make sure you get to enjoy the fruits of you labor for as long as possible? We’ve written before about using UNCONVENTIONAL COLORS to decorate for the December holidays. Regardless of your color scheme, if you find a way to incorporate some sparkle or metallic elements, your holiday decorations can do double duty as New Years’ décor. Martha Stewart’s Shimmering Streamers are the perfect example of how to maximize the potential of your holiday trappings.

2. Use What You Already Have

Most of us have at least a few people on our gift list this year. If you have a big family or lots of friends you exchange gifts with, decorations may seem like an extravagance that has to be relegated to the back burner. Well, we have some good news: your generous gift buying will work to your decorating advantage. Add some flair to the typical ho-hum gift wrapping and let your presents add that holiday sparkle to your apartment.

3. DIY

These days, DIY is a hot trend, but not all projects are created equal. Fortunately, there are several holiday DIY’s that we think pass muster when it comes to practicality and pizzazz. You can find countless wreath making tutorials with a simple google search. One of our favorites can be found here. It’s actually described as a “Halloween” wreath, but you can change out the color or add some ornaments to customize it to whichever holidays you wish. Another DIY craft we recommend is this simple and sweet menorah from Apartment Therapy. This project really encompasses our second tip of using what you already have around the house.

Create Your Own Stockings–A Fun Apartment Project

Holiday StockingsCreating home holiday crafts can be a fun activity for the entire family during the holiday season. It’s a great way to connect again, when everyone puts down their technology for a little while and sits around the table creating something new with seasonal cheer. Get your family or roommates together in your TriBridge apartment, and get ready to have some fun making holiday stockings.

Woman’s Day magazine suggests gathering a few items for your stocking craft activities. Pencil, paper, scissors, felts, ribbon, craft glue, needle, and thread are items needed for the stockings. You can generally find these items at your local craft store, such as a Michael’s or Hobby Lobby, or discount store. Take a piece of paper and draw a template or pattern for your stocking, the designs, and the letters.

Once you cut out the patterns, you can sew the stocking, leaving one end open. You will then glue the decorations and letter on the stocking. Lastly, you will add the ribbon to create the loop for handing the stocking. Will you create stockings to hang or do you already have a stocking? How do you decorate your apartment home for the holidays?

The holiday season provokes some of us to become interior decorators. We gather magazines and search online magazines. We gather with our friends to decorate our homes with festive accent pillows, wreaths, plants, candles and ceramics.

We spend entire days redecorating our home according to the holiday or season. We then spend nearly the same amount of time changing our apartment to a different holiday or season theme. We discard items that we won’t use during the next year and make a list of things that we may need to purchase once holiday items reach their sale point at our local stores. View the articles below. They offer helpful apartment decorating and holiday entertaining tips.
