Can you think of a better way to embrace the summer than to transform your living space into a faux-seaside ocean cottage? For those of us that don’t live at the beach, it’s an escape that’s often thought about throughout the year until time for vacation. Incorporating beach-style décor into your apartment can create your own piece of paradise to remind you of your favorite vacation spot. All you need are some sea shells, beach glass, and other beach finds, or search beach shops and online suppliers for immaculate assortments of shells, starfish, sand dollars, and more to create décor that has meaning for you.
Here are tips for using shells to decorate your apartment in a way that maintains both a comfortable ambiance and a stylish flair.
3-tiered server with a twist. We love the idea of using a three-tiered server, layered with beautiful ocean treasures, dried moss, and colorful corals for a hint of color. It’s a way to turn an elegant piece of your serving ware into a work of art.
Tea lights. You can turn your beach combing hobby into a practical hunt for reusable tea lights. Perfect as part of a dining table centerpiece, romantic on a nightstand, or cozy on a protected window sill, shells form a natural container for wax and a wick.
Frame it up. Before you roll your eyes remembering the home-made frames you brought home from summer camp, take a look at this example. This beautiful abalone shell-framed mirror is a gorgeous statement piece!
Sea life as art. Many boutiques use large pieces of coral, which look like a sculpture in their own right to create an elegant, beachy look. You can also stand a starfish upright on a mantle or bookcase, or adorn your dining room table centerpiece with larger conchs and other shells to add a coastal feel.
Jar displays. This method is ideal for those of us who just can’t stop collecting shells, wave softened glass, and beautiful driftwood as we stroll along a coastline. Whether your jars are a quarter full, half full, or overflowing with shells, they are still an attractive decoration. True shell addicts can even begin to sort their shells by type.
